Copyright Law:
Copyright is a legal concept, in which the maker of a brand copyright their product, so that other companies cannot copy or steal their idea of the product. Copyright is very useful because it means that a brand can be individual.

For example the Adidas sign cannot be copied because it is Adidas's own logo and they have copyrighted it. Any company that tries to copy the Adidas logo is liable for a lawsuit.

Intellectual Property

Intellectual property (IP) is a legal concept which refers to creations of the mind for which exclusive rights are recognized. Under intellectual property law, owners are granted certain exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets, such as musical, literary, and artistic works; discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols, and designs. Common types of intellectual property rights include copyrighttrademarkspatentsindustrial rightstrade dress, and in some jurisdictions trade secrets.

For example if you used someone else's music that they had wrote, and you took credit for it you are liable for a lawsuit.
